The party was inside an apartment in a three-story brick building on the corner of 68th Street and Emerald Avenue, she said. The gathering was so large that it spilled outside.
The woman, who did not want to be identified, decided to stop and had poured her friend a drink when she heard five gunshots.
"We lay our seat back in the car because it was that close," she said.
Three people at the party were wounded about 3:10 a.m. Saturday after an unknown offender began shooting, police said. A 25-year-old man was shot in the chest, and he was listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg, and a 24-year-old woman was shot in the wrist. Both were taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where they were listed in good condition.
They were among the 19 people who were wounded, including two fatally, since Friday afternoon in separate city shootings. The wounded also included a school bus driver who was grazed by a bullet Friday.
Outside the building where the triple shooting took place Sukeem Smith and others watched as officers searched the first floor of the building.
The party was meant to celebrate the birthdays of a few people, Smith said.
"Everybody was cool with each other," he said.
