Sponsors are seeking to amend Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance, which offers some protections for people in this country illegally, to require that reports of "physical abuse, threats or intimidation" against documented or undocumented immigrants be sent to oversight agencies that cover the Chicago Police Department and other city agencies.
Ald. Scott Waguespack said the change was spurred in part by a high-profile 2013 incident in which Chicago police officers raiding a North Side tanning salon were caught on closed-circuit video hitting, berating and threatening an employee of the business.
Video surveillance footage from inside Copper Tan and Spa showed employee Jianqing Klyzek on her knees and handcuffed as an officer began to shout at her.
