THIS TINY STONE SANCTUARY IS SUCH A GEM that, a couple decades back, it was used as the monastery setting for a critically acclaimed movie, the first ever Oscar-nominated film from its tiny homeland. The eerie shadows, carved icons, and faded frescos inside are suitably atmospheric, but the view from the forest above is unforgettable. The gold crucifix you see atop the tile roof was offered to invading troops during World War II as a bribe after they threatened to burn the town, but luckily they retreated before they could melt it down.

Wander the surrounding gardens as lizards bask in the afternoon sun, admiring the glassy blue surface of the lake that’s been called the oldest on its continent. The water is so clear because its basin is filled not by rivers but by underground springs. The mountains across the way are in another country altogether, one just as tiny as the nation you’re standing in. A stairway leads down to the beach, where you can enjoy the sunset from the terrasses of a small fishing village.

Follow the boardwalk into town and you’ll see that the church isn’t as lonely as it seems. In fact, medieval travelers claimed that the walled Old City was home to 365 other chapels, one for each day of the year. Before that, it was an ancient trading center whose name meant “city of light.” The bazaar today is still a bustling place to buy lake pearls and religious icons, while munching on a snack of roasted chickpeas. End your walk at the fountain in the town square next to a plane tree that was already tall when the 800-year-old church was first built. Ken Jennings

Yes, and get harrassed by Albanian muslim gypsies, harangued by eastern Orthodox priests, and leered at by the locals, all they will tell you is how great they once were, when Alexander the Great (saladtosser) was boss. Nahh, I'll take my chances in Traverse City or Naples, FL
