A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night after police say he burglarized the apartment of a neighbor who is an Elgin police officer, police said Thursday.
Ryan Hukill, of the 500 block of Redtail Ridge in Elgin, is charged with felony burglary in the incident.
About 8:15 p.m., a 17-year veteran of the Elgin Police Department, returned to his apartment on Redtail Ridge for a dinner break, finding a window screen missing and a light on in his second-floor unit, police said. The officer then saw Hukill in his apartment through a window, police said.
When the intruder realized the officer returned home, he ran out the front door and was arrested by the officer, police said.
A set of the officer’s handcuffs were taken during the burglary, police said. A gun safe had also been damaged.
Hukill appeared in Kane County bond court Thursday morning, where bail was set at $75,000, police said. He’s due in court next Jan. 17.

I know this guy and he's not a bad kid at all. It was a shock to all of us when I saw this happen. Yeah he is accountable for what he had done, but he really is a great, caring guy. Just made a stupid choice and he is paying the price for it. At least I hope that everything will be alright and there will be other solutions in his situation except jail time.

I am his father and my heart aches for him. He obviously has been making bad decisions for some time now. I agree that he needs to be held accountable and take his punishment. However, it is hard for any parent to be slammed with this and to deal with it.
I must say that I was taken by surprise and shocked. It seems that it is too easy for our youth to deceive and mislead their parents and other loved ones.
To set the record straight, his girlfriend is female. She is in anguish. Her heart is breaking as she, and I, had no idea this was going on.
As a parent, you do your best in raising your children with values and virtues, but obviously those are not always taken to heart. I know that my son has the capacity to become a great man, but to do so he has to make some drastic lifestyle changes.
I am proud that he has been working a full time and part time job while taking on a full college schedule at the same time. However, on the same hand I am very disappointed that he has chosen to do what he has done. This is definitely a setback and there is much work to do to make amends and get his life on the right path.

Mr. Hukill, my deepest sympathies for the pain you and your family are experiencing. Life is made of choices and Ryan made a bad one. Being a mom of a 20 year old son, we can only hope and pray our children will put God first in their life to lead them from making these bad decisions.
