Riverside Police Officer Josh Teune, 28, arrested for DUI by Downers Grove Police

A Riverside police officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay after he was charged by Downers Grove police on Dec. 23 with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Josh Teune, 28, was off duty when he was pulled over by police about 2:15 a.m. at 55th Street and Western Avenue in Westmont. A Downers Grove police officer reported seeing a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee weaving within its lane of travel and reaching speeds as high as 55 mph in a 35 mph zone while heading eastbound on 55th Street.
During the traffic stop, Teune identified himself as a Riverside police officer and refused to submit to field sobriety tests and a breath test.
Downers Grove police charged him with one count of DUI. He was not issued any traffic citations, according to the Downers Grove police report, "as all the traffic violations occurred in Westmont."
In a press release issued on Dec. 24, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel announced that he had placed Teune on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
"When a law enforcement officer breaks the law, it is extremely disappointing," said Weitzel. "We are held to a higher standard in the eyes of our community. I expect more from village of Riverside police officers every day. Bad behavior combined with irresponsible decision-making will not be tolerated at RPD. If you break the law, you have to suffer the consequences."
Weitzel said Teune would be relieved of his police powers while he's on leave. He said he couldn't comment on any possible disciplinary action at this time. The outcome of the DuPage County court case could factor into the discipline meted out.
"He'll be disciplined," said Weitzel. "What that'll be, I can't say."
The suspension makes a thin manpower situation in the Riverside Police Department a little thinner.
With Teune out, the department is down three police officers. Deputy Chief John Krull retires next week, and the department has been down an officer since August, when Officer Edwin Ruiz resigned.
A new officer will start the Illinois State Police academy in January, but won't graduate from the program until April, after which he'll take part in three months of supervised field training.
This story has been changed to correct the action taken against the police officer. He has not been suspended, he has been placed on administrative leave. A suspension would be a disciplinary action.

What is going on Riverside? I do not necessarily agree with the whole DUI thing and ruining good people's lives. Just seems too easy to get a DUI and enter a world and lifetime of hurt. Draconian.

But if he was not issued any other citation, what was the legal reason for pulling him over? The ticket sequence is supposed to be speeding, some other violation, then DUI.

Don't drink and drive especially if you are the police.

Nice going assholes at Downers Grove PD. The fucking guy didnt crash, no harm no foul. WTF is the matter with these new breed of cops?

Anonymous said...

A traffic accident is one thing, but a pimply traffic stop? Get the guy a ride home you fucking jag offs. God, I couldn't imagine working for a western suburb. I still can't believe this story.

Coulda helped the guy out, it was great they stopped him before he hit someone, but they coulda got the guy to a Dunkin Doughnuts coffee shop etc and got hold of a family member to cone and get him. Very pimpy in my opinion. Back off the bottle officers, it's a new generation of Kiddy-Kop out there today.

This job is fucked. What happened to the days where everyone looked out for each other. Park the guys car and get him a cab. WTF I'm glad I have 2 years to go. There are more shit balls in this job. It use to be the other way around, years ago. He's probably going to beat the DUI..

He should have known better. The Abbate incident should be a lesson for all to keep in mind - Chicago or the burbs. The law is the law.

Nice Jeep, we all drink and speed at times, nazis are nazis anti gun or anti adult beverage.

I have a mile road on my farm and you are free to drink and drive on it, Private property mfers.

I work at DGPD and I dint even hear about this.

Anonymous said...

It's in DuPage County what else do you expect?

Anonymous said...

Why would you equate this with Abbate ? I hope that you are
Not the police !

Anonymous said...

Clearly this isn't the whole story. For all we know the guy could have been a complete drunken jag bag and gone well beyond the scope of professional courtesy.

This is not the first time Downers Grove did another Officer. Grayslake PD was good at locking up cops until their Chief got arrested for DUI in Wisconson. What comes around goes around DGPD. Someone the hero Officers.

I work for a town that borders Downers Grove....

All I would like to say is not ALL suburban cops have forgotten courtesy. It's a shame that many police departments have these cancer cops that don't respect the THIN BLUE LINE and THE BADGE.

It's up to all of us to TEACH these newer breeds of cops on how to the the POLICE the right way.

If someone doesn't do something right, then they need to be pulled aside and told to cut the shit.

It's a shame that suburban cops are getting a black eye due to a small percentage of police who don't have a clue on what they are doing.

Let's take care of each other people, at the end of the day we are all we got when shit hits the fan.

Downers grove strokes. Take the fucking officer home you assholes. If we can't take care of each other then we've got nothing left.

Anonymous said...

Damn. Back in the day I got stopped for swerving. Copper had me park the car. Keys in trunk n told me hoof it home. I was close to home and NOT a cop. Family on job. Stand up move. Bought em lunch not long after that. Copper said he didn't wana ruin my life n that he was young once too. What's the world comin to

POST HIS MUGSHOT like you do all the other people that get arrested.

The bad news: getting a break is not that common anymore. Also, there's a ton of pimpy little bitches with stars these days.
The good news: the pimpy little bitch fucked up. With no pc ticket, everything else goes out the window. Enjoy the suit against you officer cunt!

Downers has a reputation of being their own world and doing things like this. It's not really the new generation there, its the whole place. Stay out of Downers.

Downers Grove cops or at least some of them are real hard ass jerks. They act like they are in real danger or something, i.e. like a cop working on the West or South side would. Only thing is when you cooperate and give them respect, they still dick you around. They stopped an older family member of mine going to work and played mind games with him. No record, no tickets, etc. Just going to work in early AM!

Anonymous said...

The real question is: If it were a Downers Grove Police Officer, would they arrest and charge him with DUI / DWI too??? If not, why????

Stay out of this town and all the others around it, unless you work there! Some of the young or rookie / new breed cops in these towns are really something else. They don't know how EASY they have it!

All cop's who are commenting here, sticking up for this drunk driving cop are a bunch of hypocrites!!! If someone commits a crime against a cop they receive a harsher penalty. It should go both ways, if a cop commits a crime he should be held to a higher standard than your average citizen and have more serious charges leveled against him!

Nobody is sticking up for him. The difference is that when the average joe citizen gets a dui it costs him some money and his employer doesn't even need to know about it. A cop gets any kind of traffic violation that causes him to lose his license and he LOSES HIS ENTIRE FUCKING CAREER. Let's face it, just about everyone has gotten behind the wheel at some time in their life when they probably shouldn't have and drove home. If you ever had a single beer or glass of wine and drove home, I could DUI your ass. So quit with the cops have to be perfect all the fucking time bullshit. Cops are human too and they make mistakes just like you! I'm sure if you had a few beers and were driving home you'd appreciate the cops giving you a ride home instead of fucking up your year. With a cop it's fucking up his whole life as well as his family members' lives too. Yeah, all cops should be smarter and not drink and drive but lets face it, when you're drinking your judgement IS impaired. Not to mention if you had to deal with some of the shit cops deal with on a daily basis, you'd fucking drink too.

Hey "Justice- for- 4all and 830 am poster" you Lberal fucking scum media troll. Go fuck your self! You were not there and the Officer is presummed innocent.

DGPD better watch your speed and wear your seat belts dumb asses.

Anonymous said...

Hey cops, you know the law and want respect. How about obeying the law regarding drunk driving? Sure you can get by with driving drunk most of the time, but that one time you had just a little over your ability to function gets someone hurt/killed, property damaged, etc. Is it worth it?

Anonymous said...

There is much more to this story. Most of DGPD are good cops.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to the Downers Grove Officer that tried to rip off a auto dealership of tens of thousands recruited a wannabe security guard to do the job with him????

Anonymous said...

DGPD, I imagine roll call has about 3 coppers in it, all with mustaches and hard ass demeanors. The "Real Deal".

99.9% of us over here are embarrassed by this.

Anonymous said...

I pulled the police report on this incident, and the arresting Ofc describes Teuny as polite and cooperative the entire stop. The report is also a piece of garbage that would have been better if it was written in crayon. There is nothing more to this story than stay out of DuPage

Anonymous said...

Don't blame all the guys over at DGPD. Most of us don't like the arresting officer either. Everyone else understands discretion. Sorry

Anonymous said...

Got fired. Got charged. He was a loser and a DB. No one liked him. Glad he's gone.

Wow! So disappointed and afraid at the same time in reading some of these comments! Cops that believe in bending the law in their favor! Clearly, some of the ones defending this officer are indeed officers themselves. Such hypocrites!!! God forbid any of your loved ones are EVER killed by a drunk driver that was let go on a"professional courtesy", which is a privilege and NOT a right! Cops are HUMAN FIRST! COP SECOND! I think you guys forget that sometimes. You're a cop ACT like it, you have to be smarter at ALL times and definitely when breaking the law! I understand sticking up for a fellow brother but where do you draw the line??? Will you let another officer kill someone out of "professional courtesy"? YOU GUYS ARE THE ONES THAT PROMOTE GETTING A DESIGNATED DRIVER & NOT DRINKING & DRIVING! So who the HELL are you to enforce it but NOT heed to it? "New Breed"? LOL! I commend officers that uphold the law, especially that Downers officer, he was put in a tight position when that man decided to get behind the wheel and jeopardize his life and others on the road. Give him a ride home or to a Dunkin Donuts for coffee, you guys have figured it all out. Cops don't get paid to babysit nor cab people around. Besides, since when does coffee help a drunk person? More foolery here! To the Downers officer that's embarrassed-you & whoever else you are speaking for at your department are PATHETIC AS HELL! You should be uplifting your brother because he chose to hold up the oath that ALL of you took, but I guess it's all fun & games once you get the badge & gun, huh? If I remember correctly, It's Protect & Serve, NOT Bend the Law & Cover it UP! To those that feel you should stay out of Dupage do so, the streets are safer without you-STAY in good ol' CROOK COUNTY! Lastly, to the person that claims they read the report & is divulging police records info, are you their PIO? Are you authorized to release such information on a public site? Anyhow, I guess that's just another officer following his own rules again....Wait until it's your turn to make such a decision Mr. Officer!

In reading these comments, I see the arresting officer being made out to be the bad guy here. Wake up people!!!Where does RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS come into play. The arresting officer did not screw up Officer Teune's life. OFFICER TEUNE DID!!!when he chose to drive intoxicated. What I read is as long as he didn't crash and kill anybody its no big deal and he should have been let go-- wtf are you kidding me --what if there was a next time ---what if it were one of your family. I cant believe all the comments taking responsibility off the offender. What if he chose not to drive drunk there would be no running blog. As for all you DG people who say you are embarrased or we are not all bad--- way to go-- good job backing one of your own Glad I don't work in DG what a show of camraderie

In reading these comments, I see the arresting officer being made out to be the bad guy. Where does RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS come in. So I take the comments to mean if he didn't crash and or kill anyone -if it is me or my friends it is ok just let him go. What if it happened again, what if it were your family member. Nobody ruined Officer Teune's life but OFFICER TEUNE when he made a bad decision. We all have had to live with bad decisions and the consequences that come with it that is the learning process. COP OR CIVILIAN. Glad I don't work in DG with all the back stabbing co workers the PD there has.

Karma's a bitch for this "jack booted thug" who makes his living fucking us "regular joes" over.Wonder how many Dui and seat belt stings this no good cocksucker has taken part in?Riverside being the DUI capital of Cook county.Him and all his jag bag ,ass fuck pals routinely act as though "their" somehow above the law.Maybe now he'll be forced to sit in wit some common folks at a DUI class and see how it feels to be on the receiving end of "ruined career". And these "professional babysitters" who call themselves suburban cops wonder why society has such little regard for these no good,2inch dick motherfuckers.

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming the no pc ticket was because he charged him with an ov dui and had no violation in dg other than the dui. still I agree its bullshit, park his car and get him home safe

Anonymous said...

Become a cop and see what we deal with, maybe then you would expect a break from someone who is supposed to have your back.

Anonymous said...

I am going to have to disagree with this. If driving is a requirement of the position, any "average Joe citizen" could also lose their job too. For example, I could lose my job if I had too many driving violations or a DUI, which is why I always take cabs when I know I am unable to drive. It's called practicing good judgement. It doesn't matter who you are, if you drive drunk, you should expect to suffer consequences. As a member of law enforcement, you should be held to a higher standard because it is your duty to protect the public. If you fail to do so, you suffer the consequences, just like everyone else. NO ONE is above the law. Frankly, as a citizen that works in Downers Grove, I would be extremely disappointed to find out that any of these anonymous comments were from DGPD. Enforce and follow the law and if you can't do that, then you're in the wrong profession.

Some slob gets a job cause he knows somebody, drinks and drives every weekend and gets pass after pass because he's a cop. This great brain made a few DUI arrests himself last year by the way. So you pull this goof over and now you're stuck doing a favor for an alcoholic who, if he crashes next weekend, will get you jammed-up as you get reemed by the media, the lawyers and your own department--cause your stop is on camera!! Maybe if this genius was smart enough to just call himself a cab, he'd still have a job. Sounds like this cop who arrested him is a goof himself... We all know we work with alcoholics and goofs alike. I'll help both of them in the line of duty without asking, but I'm not gonna get sued, fired or charged for anybody, alcoholic or goof. But go ahead with your thin blue line BS... let us know how it is working security for $10 an hour. By the way, where's the thin blue line in Schaumburg? Just selling coke from the evidence room? No harm no foul right? No one got hurt but some drug dealers right? Big deal, give em a break, right?

Do the speed limit, don't swerv in your lane, follow all traffic signals and signs. If you can't accomplish this then you get what you got coming. Oh ya, make sure all your vehicle lights and signals work and keep your lisence plate current. Downers Grove means business and so do most municipalities. Media should be careful what they report before a guilty finding. I'm sure there is more meaningful news to report on other than common traffic stops. As far as being harassed by police, keep your phone, iPad or camra/video recording device handy while you drive. The Illinois Evesdropping Law has been challenged and beat. I'm personally getting onboard audio-vidio box. Not all police are interested in your rights.

Current statistics shows from January to April 9 this year, drunk driving has taken 9,141 lives. 27, 038 lives are ceased by alcohol abuse/use. If you do the math, that’s a total of 36,179 death due to alcohol. This DUI incident is just the tip of the iceberg, don’t care if it involves a police officer or a mere civilian. What we should worry about is on how to control alcohol abuse. No alcoholic drinks for sale no police DUI offender, no civilian DUI offender or a Priest DUI offender. Problem is, alcoholic beverages manufacturer pays a huge sum of amount with taxes that the government may not see this solution as plausible. If so, why not be idiotic enough to drive while highly intoxicated. Or a graver penalty can be imposed to condemned DUI offenders.
