Father’s last words to son: ‘They shot me in the back’
“They shot me in the back.” Michael Kozel, a beloved Gage Park muffler shop owner, managed to pick up a telephone and speak those words to his 31-year-old son late Wednesday afternoon. They were Kozel’s last words to his boy.
The owner of a Gage Park muffler shop was killed in an armed robbery Wednesday night, according to police.
He was shot in the back as he tried to run from his attackers, police said.
Michael Kozel, of the 2700 block of West Siepp Street in the Wrightwood neighborhood, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 9:09 p.m.
Two men entered Independent Mufflers Inc. about 5:20 p.m., in the 5600 block of South Western Avenue, and demanded money, police said. Kozel tried to flee but was shot in the back once, authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County about 9:10 p.m., the fifth homicide in Chicago in the first two days of 2013, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Records show that Kozel owned and operated the muffler shop.
About a half hour later, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg in the the 7200 block of South Maplewood Avenue in the Marquette Park neighborhood. He saw two men in ski masks before one opened fire, hitting him in the leg. The round exited his heel and he was treated at Holy Cross Hospital for the wound, police said.

Yet another story of a nice guy in a bad neighborhood, someone who sticks it out to try to be at least a flicker of light in a messed-up situation.....

Whether it's a guy like this, or an old lady with a candy store who is loved by all, or a shop owner who extends a helping hand to people who might be down on their luck....they all seem to get killed.
