LOCKPORT, IL - A 17-year-old illegal alien residing in Lockport Township was on life support this morning at a Joliet hospital after being shot by the Will County Sheriff's Deputy he allegedly slashed Thursday night at a home near the intersection of Plainfield and Caton Farm roads, officials said.
Will County Sheriff's Police spokesman Kathy Hoffmeyer said two deputies responded to a 7:26 p.m. report of a subject acting erratically and threatening harm to family members at the home on the 2300 block of Gaylord Road.
Hoffmeyer said a family member admitted the deputies inside, where they saw Jose Chavez in a hallway holding "a butcher knife."
Chavez refused repeated commands to drop the knife, then sliced one deputy's face, Hoffmeyer said. She shot him once in the chest and he ran from the home; he was apprehended outside by two Crest Hill police officers, Hoffmeyer said.
Both the deputy and Chavez were transported to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center.
